A guide to Fletching & Alchemy

Many archers dream of being able to make their own arrows, with properties that by far surpass the damage you can do with regular arrows bought "ready made" from the local boyer. To this end, we have provided this guide. To help you find heads and tails in this task of making your own elemental and greater arrows.

The process can be divided into to two main steps, first the making of oils, applying them to your arrowheads, and secondly the actual fletching itself, involving the attachment of an arrowhead to a shaft (be that quarrel or arrow). For the first step, a skill in alchemy is required, for the second part of the process, Fletching is needed.

How much skill do you actually need to be proficient in each of these? Well - it is difficult to be exact. Alchemy is the easy part, so unless you have it trained on your fletcher already, don't panic. Create a mule and make your oils and arrowheads here. Even with a skill of only 130-140 you will be highly successful in making your oils and arrowheads. A high degree of Focus and Coordination (100) as well as Strength (to help your mule carry the many components and arrowheads, plus specialized Alchemy on that mule will give you the best starting point.

Fletching the arrows or quarrels is a bit more tricky, and even with a skill of 250+, you will still fail aprx. 1 in 10 bundles when fletching greater elemental arrows or quarrals. So if you don't have Fletching trained on a character with XP's available to raise it, either you have to create a mule that you can actually level a bit, ask someone highly proficient in fletching to do the final step of fletching the heads you have already made on your Alchemy mule, or you have to accept a higher rate of failure. If you choose to ask another to fletch for you - be considerate of his or her time, and offer that person to keep 5-10% of the arrowheads you provide as "payment for services rendered".

But lets get down to business and look at the Alchemy part first:

Alchemy - the making of oils and arrowheads

You will need Alembic (only buy one, it never runs out).  The chart below lists the components you will need to create the arrows you desire:

Component:    Arrow
Quicksilver:   Greater
Brimstone:   Acid
Turpeth:   Fire
Colcothar:   Frost
Cobalt:  Lightning

Types of arrowheads and where to buy them:

Arrow Type Where to buy
Regular:   Most all Boyers
Blunt:   Sawato
Frog:   Baishi
Broadhead:   Hebian-To
Armor Piercing:   Mayoi, Naydissa Castle

Note: Only regular heads can be elemental...Acid, Fire, Frost or Lightning.  Special heads can only be made into greater arrows.

To move the whole process along faster, here is a nice bit of information.

Place the alembic in shortcut 1, press the 1 key and click on the component
(components cannot be placed in the shortcut area). Make all the infusions you need.

Collect the infusions, they stack into bundles of 12.  Place the infusion in shortcut 1 and Aqua Incanta in shortcut 2, then it's a simple 1-2-1-2, etc to make the oils.

TIP: When collecting the Infusions, Oils and arrowheads - select the first item you want to stack and use the "F" shortcut (the key to pick up an item from the ground). This will automatically stack your items in stack's of 12, and you can moove them to a pack and continue stacking.

Like the infusions you collect the oils into stacks of 12.  Place the oils into shortcut 1 and the heads into slot 2, repeat like above The heads can be gathered into bundles of 100

NOTE:  If your making greater elementals it doesn't matter which you apply first the elemental oil or the bloodseeker oil, but you must apply them to the heads before you fletch them to the shafts.

Fletching - the difficult part

Place the heads you've created into slot 1 and the shafts into slot 2 and work your magic.  An easy way to collect the completed arrows is to double click each bundle, they will load into your quiver. Once you reach 100 remove them and repeat until you've collected all your arrows into bundles.

TIP:  Make up your heads in advance, I try to make 1000 greater heads when I can and then only fletch about 1000 arrows, 100 heads (1000 heads = 10,000 arrows if 100% successful), leaving me 900 heads to use in the future.  Don't store shafts on my mules...too heavy.  They can be bought cheaply enough from the provisioner in Biashi (500p for 100).

Good luck on your fletching
