Thieves & Stealing

Since Turbine finds it perfectly acceptable for a character in Asheron's Call, to take on the role of a thief, and still have to provide us with a safe mechanism of trading, we continually have to remind people of the dangers involved when trading or dealing with people you don't know really well.

By clicking on the links to the left, you will find a list of thieves as well as a list of suspected thieves. We ask that you take a careful look at these lists in the following situations:

If you are about to trade with someone you don't know
Whenever you have a new vassal pledge to you

If you have encounters with a thief, or suspect that someone might be a thief, please send the relevant information to webmaster, and we will update our lists.

How a thief might operate

There are many ways a thief might choose to operate. In the June Patch, Turbine finally decided to remove the deferral mapping of the "V" key on you keyboard, that before made you drop any item you had selected on the ground. A cunning thief would use this, by asking you if you knew you could cast a random spell on a piece of armor or your weapon. He would claim this would happen if you pressed <ctrl>+<v> on you keyboard. But instead it would make you drop your selected item on the ground, and he would quickly grab it (since he knew it was coming) and run off.

But there are still plenty of ways of stealing and cheating. Especially during a trading situation. Only proven advice is NEVER to trade or deal with someone you don't know or trust. Even a characters name may not be a security in itself. Thieves have been know to create characters named "Brell's Mule" although Brell had nothing to do with the character or the thievery. Examine a character to see who his Monarch and Patron is, that may give you a small assurance. If in doubt, ask that character to log on his main character, and give you a tell to ensure his validity.

Trading may also be conducted through a third party, but often thieves work in pairs, and a third party may show up very conveniently, only to prove to be an accomplish.

Others use the method of running between two people trading. To prevent this: Stand close to each other, and make sure no one else is nearby, then give the item(s) to your friend.

If you have to mule items on your own. Do it in a secluded and less populated area. If you stand in water while muling, it may not be evident to the thief casually walking by that items are left on the ground because they are "hidden" under the water. But beware. A proven method of stealing is to stalk you as you come home from your hunting-trips, follow you just off radar range to find you muling-spot, wait till you log of, and then run ahead and grab whatever you have left on the ground.

Above all, be careful where, who and how you make you dealings.
